By the way, Golden Dame, I’m reading the book you sent to me: "The Philosophy of H.P. Lovecraft" , The Route to Horror, by Timo Airaksinen. It’s excellent, it’s a splendid, new light to understand many dark corners of the tales of H.P. Lovecraft and, moreover, it’s very easy to understand, written in an easy English, without erudite words.

I recommend it to everybody. It was published in 1999 by Peter Lang Publishing, Inc.

Thanks to this study I’m re-reading the tales the author mentions in the book.

As a kind of "at this spot I’ve stopped my reading" signal, I have a wonderful postcard of New York and sent from NY. Thanks, millions and millions of thanks!

Dame Keziah Mason

H.P. Lovecraft: The Case of Charles Dexter Ward :

“Hearing of Curwen as the owner of the best library in Providence, Mr. Merritt early paid him a call, and was more cordially received than most other callers at the house had been. His admiration for his host’s ample shelves, which besides the Greek, Latin, and English classics were equipped with a remarkable battery of philosophical, mathematical, and scientific works including Paracelsus, Agricola, Van Helmont, Sylvius, Glauber, Boyle, Boerhaave, Becher, and Stahl, led Curwen to suggest a visit to the farmhouse and laboratory whither he had never invited anyone before; and the two drove out at once in Mr. Merritt’s coach. “

- Does anyone have an idea which Agricola is referred to in this quotation?

Perhaps the name refers to Gnaeus Julius Agricola, a Roman general responsible for much of the Roman conquest of Britain. His biography was published by his son-in-law, the historian Tacitus. But then, why mention Agricola and not Tacitus?

Since references to Finland are not too many, of course, I’d like to think it’s the Finnish Mikael Agricola (1510 – 1557), the founder of the Finnish written language.

He was a known scientist in Lovecraft’s time and thus could well be included on the "ample shelves" of Joseph Curwen’s library :)

Or, perhaps, the name refers to some other scientist by the same name. I don’t know. If you have any thoughts on this, I would very much like to hear !

Greetings from the old Witch House

Dear learned comrades,

Re: liberal attitudes towards minorities, I have no statistics but compared to Europe (Scandinavia or Spain) my educated guess is that we tend to be more tolerant or liberal than the U.S.
Unfortunately I don’t know American society so well, so I can’t say to what extent movies reflect changes in it.
I so totally agree with you; Brokeback Mountain may not be a good example but also my view is that one film alone does not qualify as a sufficient tool of measurement. Also I believe that the concept of “politically correct; to disguise what someone really thinks / believes in what the general trend wants to hear”, is not just an American but a much more universal feature of behaviour.

Between the messages, I have moved my lodgings to the middle of nowhere, to the Russian frontier, in South Karelia. Blessed be the wireless network that enables my little computer work like magic even here!

From the big blue Lake, I send you greetings of a cool Pohjomouthian summer night.

Querido amigo Henry Armitage:

Of course, responsible audience need to be careful not to go along with whatever whim the film industry is presenting. They have their own goals with the very idea of what will sell well.

However, I think that all kinds of stories deserve to be told, instead of sweeping under the carpet, with or without a happy ending, - especially ones that make a point on a sensitive topic: a place like Hollywood can trigger world-wide debate. Responsible audience, in turn, should know if they allow their attitudes be affected or not; if the example given is good or not so good.

One film alone cannot do much, obviously it is a much larger question. The myth of dumb big blonds was not created overnight by means of one Marilyn movie, either.

A cry from the dark depths of the abyss, wishes everyone joyful summer days :)

As far as the film Brokeback Mountain is concerned, I don’t doubt it can be a good example about the change in the Hollywood & America ideas about monorities. Anyway, the film is certainly touching, but the end was really sad and awful, so I think the American society has changed very little, when stories like that have happened and go on happening.

Estimados comrades Mr. Kharvatos and Dr. Henry

Re: discrimination, age, working life, sex, society, justice, equality...

The Equality Act I mentioned earlier is of special importance in for working life; it also combats discrimination based on age. It’s a pan-European thing, made visible in public, for instance in company strategies, but common practice can sometimes be far from the ideology of the legal text.

An American contemporary philosopher, Martha Nussbaum, in her book Sex and Social Justice is of the opinion that sex and sexuality are morally irrelevant distinctions that have been artificially enforced as sources of social hierarchy.

She proposes functional freedoms, or central human capabilities as means to carry out social justice. She argues, for example, in support of the legalization of prostitution. In terms of civil obligations, she argues that military service should be equally compulsory to women as it is to men.

I am not quite sure how the functional freedom or central human capabilities apply here. She explains that women (and men?) should have the freedom to choose whether to work in a factory or as a prostitute. If s/he chooses the latter job, safe working conditions and a regular pay must be secured by law. (in the context of prostiution she only spoke about women but I added men as a comment... )

In the way the military service functions nowadays, she argues that there is no reason why women could not handle the same military, or compensating civil service, exercises as men do. (As it is, women do have the freedom to choose to go to the army, if they want to. I personally must say, it’s not my cup of tea!)

Nussbaum’s observation about Finnish society and social justice is that in a homogenous society as Finnish society is, the illusion of unity may turn against minorities: in Finland against the Sámi people in Lapland, or against immigrants by issuing strict immigrant laws, and closing the frontiers. (my comment: Finnish frontiers are by no means closed...)

What Mr. Kharvatos pointed out, about one group imposing its values on another group, that it’s dangerous, I think so, too.

However, I want to remind, as we know, some things are going for the better: in Spain, as in Finland, the winds of change are blowing and liberal laws are being issued in favour of minorities, including sexual minorities. They are now allowed rights and protection that were unheard of some time ago. Development in Spain has gained public attention even in the Finnish media.

The earlier mentioned Hollywood has done a good deed by promoting the touching film Brokeback Mountain with an Oscar.

Dear comrades, from the bottom of the bottomless abyss, I send you my thanks for all your comments and luscious discussions!

Un abrazo tentacular de Keziah Mason

Estimado Mr. Armitage:

Kharvatos

Beloved Dr. Henry Armitage:

- however, some people would consider you lucky!

There are those occupations that are traditionally held by women. Why that is, there must be a myriad of reasons.

My whole working environment is so large and changing that I have no percentage to present as to the shares of men and women. The top bosses, yes, are females. It is somewhat peculiar because traditionally speaking, indeed, you would expect men in their positions!

I only know my local unit: jobs are mostly occupied by women, but the few male colleagues in the staff are treated and adored like they were gods; they are the ones that are listened to. “Behind every great man there is a great woman” turns into “ Behind a female boss there’s a man/men who really run the business!” Even for the same job a handsome, young male employee earns more than an ugly, old female colleague. It’s not a regular rule, but it happens.

Even though there is this Equality Act which prohibits sex discrimination and imposes a duty to promote sex equality, and even though every working environment is obliged to have a public strategy on this, there is no such thing as equality. Perhaps in a perfect world there is, but certainly not in the one we are living in.

The one who has a sharper tongue, quicker mind, physical strength, more money and power, easily takes advantage, abuses and controls others the other one who is less fortunate in those aspects. I think it happens everywhere: at work, home, children’s play or state politics, all the same.

Many loving thoughts from my cold and rainy planet to your warm and sunny world,

Dorada Keziah Mason

Yo, no.

Beloved Dr. Henry Armitage,

Thank you for the link for the portrait of Lovecraft!

Referring to our previous discussions, I’m sure you allow a female comment here: yes, there’s something sinister and mysterious about him, but that’s what one would expect, and yes, he simply looks good!

And another thing:

Being well-aware that you are busy with your duties and research but since you did a great job translating H.P. Lovecraft’s poem Cindy - - I have an honest suggestion that in your note book of “things-to-do” you consider including a translation also into Finnish. And also the Balada de Randolph Carter of F. Torres Oliver, 1973.

You have the cultural knowledge, linguistic skills and writing talent; besides it would be a cultural service, because not much, if any, translated material is available in Finnish. – So what say you? Take it into your consideration?

The shadows over Pohjomouth have been very dark during the last days and nights. Your wise comments and solid support, as always, have shewn the light at the bottom of the abyss. Still with watch dogs howling in the distance, I am pleased to find escape through the portal to this splendid Forum!

Dear Mr. HWMNBN. and Dr. H. Amitage,

your last comments are much appreciated and so totally supported by yours truly.

Even today I read in the local paper about a pretty lady who reached a top position in an organisation and who tells how much harder she had to work for the goal than her male colleagues. Just to be more professional is not always enough. It seems to be a universal pattern that women to succeed like men, to reach top positions in business or politics, to break the glass roof, need to act in a way that is generally regarded as a more masculine way: straightforward, ruthless, aggressive, insensitive, even cold. Emotional intelligence should be an asset, but too often it is not.

Yes, as a matter of fact, I happened to see the episode of Dr. House that you referred to, and paid attention to the same point! What a##$$$$<4! - - Have you seen TV series “Ugly Betty”? I don’t watch it anymore because I realised that it’s all pretending: she is in fact too pretty to carry the name Ugly.

I also think that there is no such thing as “perfect equality”, it is impossible and would lead into a chaos. But there can always be humanity, respect and consideration instead of degrading and humiliation.

Kind regards, always,

Keziah Mason

Lovecraft

Lovecraft.

Dear Logia-naries Keziah and Henry

My feeling is that if sometimes one can match a connection between uglyness and intelligence and beauty and stupidity is just because some times people open more easily the doors to those who are considered "beautyfull" (i put the terms in braquets because ugly and beauty are such subjective conceptions...) while for those who are considered as "ugly" things are not as easy, they have to work harder to access to the same oportunities and postions.

In other words while the "beautifull" person reached a given position just for his physical apparence, because he/she pleased those who had the power to let him access there, the "ugly" one on the contrary would be at that same postion by its own merit

It is a bite simplist but sometimes thazt is how can happen

Now pls do, not missinterpret my words, I’m not saying that this is what usually happens and moreover, in a world where performance comes first and above everything else what I said above would scarcely happen
Yet sometimes when two persons with almost same capacities compete to reaching a same position, the one who is "beautifull" to the eyes of the one who decides who will keep in that position, would possibly have better chances than the one considered as less "pretty"

Just remember one episode of Doctor House, when docter Cameron asked him why did he chose her for his medical staff he said just because she was pretty.
She felt offende at his words and said-wasn’t it for my merit?? I was among the best pupils of the my medicine school"
-One of the best, but not the better" replied this bloody bastard

Dear Logia-Colleagues Keziah & Hee

I join to this discussion about beauty and intelligence. Are there any connection? The answer is yes, the same as ugliness and intelingence, beauty and stupidity. Anyway we could analyze the matter from the blondies’ point of view, her part in this story and many of them only care about mirrors and they exploit that role.

I think a good example could be Marylin Monroe that Hee Hoo mentioned. She exploited that role of stupid, beautiful blondie, but she was very intelligent.

I don’t believe in the equality of men and women, simply because I don’t believe in the equality of men and other men, the same about women.

Greetings to you both and the rest of the Logia Family.

Dear Henry Armitage,

- you must be a wizard for a Professor, :) you have produced a translation in a record time! From what I understand, you have created a wonderful piece of translation, even with the explanatory mark on Los Cínicos! I think it reads well and transmits the sensation of, as you say, contenido irónico y burlesco.

I don’t see racist inclinations, maybe I’m blind, but I see a witty analysis of a working woman’s rough working conditions in a busy city, hard and simple life, her appearance; colourful and grinning face, but who is obviously carrying a burden in her soul. As a reader, through the poet, you are an outsider, watching Cindy work, and along with the poet, you are also glad you are not her… but wish you could do something for her.

Un abrazo fuerte y muchas gracías por su trabajo, it’s a great pleasure to see this poem in your Stately Speech of Spain!

Dear all:

Regarding the topic of beautiful women and blondes, ... this is a topic where I wish to make a few general comments: I think rating blonde females more beautiful and especially more stupid in comparison to females or males of other skin colour is degrading, chauvinist, racist, and definitely against equality of gender, and against human rights. http://www.un.org/Overview/rights.html , Article 2.

- often the look is usually associated with his temperament and perhaps its psychology: on everyone’s mind what would be the beautiful women and blondes are dumb (perhaps envy of women and ugly morenuchas) and muscular men as little smarter (which may act again envy from enclenques and alfeñiques).

True, and oftentimes a Big Blonde is an object of juicy jokes. There are also those who willingly feed these concepts and turn it into a business. One can only hope that in this entertainment business the rule of equality is fullfilled in win-win situations :)

We all know that the referred United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights is ideal and worth supporting but that it is ruthlessly violated all the time all over the world.

Within our Family of Neologia we all respect human rights and gender equality and can see through the veils of Hollywood as well as other veils and woods!

-¡AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHH!

....

¿Que le parece a usted?

Un fuerta abrazo a todos

Beloved Dr. Henry Armitage:

Thank you for your instruction and erudite guidance, always kind and to the point.

Referring to Lovecraft’s poem Providence in 2000 A.D., the extraordinary poem that directly touches our time, I want to make a comment on spacing: There is almost no spacing in my copy, which makes reading a bit laborous, but that’s how spacing also appears in the original source, and obviously I couldn’t change that.

The Book we have so often mentioned has been mouldering long enough in these obscure Pohjomouthian chambers but is now on its jolly way to your hands. Please, kindly let me know when it arrives.

Despite the cold and rain and stormy winds that have been torturing us Pohjomouthians lately, there’s a beam of sunshine today: I discovered a lone red rose in the back yard of the house. It looks small but brave, as if determined to grow and glow in just a few days. I couldn’t help thinking that it is an omen, a good sign of success and congratulations in advance on the birth of the 5th ESTELA!

Go well. Un abrazo y besos de

Keziah Mason
